One of the first ideas that came to my mind was a machine
that is able to read the minds of criminals. Instead of wasting endless hours
interrogating them, however, my ideal invention would be a device that enables
people who cannot communicate, to make their thoughts known.
I would use a simple chip that sticks onto someone’s forehead (or wherever they want to stick it) that transmits thoughts wirelessly to a computer screen (iPad, tablet… etc.) in the same room. Individuals who are unable to communicate verbally, with sign language or through writing could use the machine. Perhaps, some day, the device could even translate thoughts into spoken words. The user would also be able to manipulate the device to suppress thoughts that he/she does not want to share. Disabled individuals, who yearn to express themselves or just socialize, could make use of this device. I guess the device could also be used as an alternative to interrogation, but then the feature that deactivates unwanted thoughts would have to be turned off.

ReplyDeleteHey Ross,
ReplyDeleteI think your idea sounds really great—the idea of using using a mind-reading device to help those who can't communicated, connect with friends and family would be something truly powerful. The idea of making the readings available to multiple electronic devices seems especially savvy, as that would make communication truly possible in this day and age. I wonder in what fields of research scientists are closest to discovering a machine of this sort.
THat''s a very interesting device, with some very disturbing applications. It kinda reminds me of a group of engineers that are trying to make an x-ray camera that can work in something as small as a phone. I wonder how society would function when the concept of privacy comes to an end. If not even your own thoughts are sacred, what is?
